Hostess cupcakes are the perfect way to reveal the gender of your baby to your friends and family!

Surprise!!!!  It’s a…Gender Reveal Cupcakes | Garnish and Glaze

GIRL!!!!

We are so thrilled that we are having another little girl!  I’m so excited to meet her and see Carly interact and become friends with her.  My husband is going to be even more outnumbered but he is honestly such a great girl’s daddy.  So protective, cautious, and loving.  Carly just loves cuddling with him and wants him whenever she gets hurt.

Carly came with Nick and I to the ultra sound appointment and was being super cute and kept making us all laugh.  She would point to the TV monitor and say “baby” and then when we told her it is a girl she actually said it.  It’s so fun to see her learn so much each day.

Having a girl works out so perfect for us.  Carly was born in June and baby girl #2 is due in July so she should fit into all of Carly’s clothes each season.  It also makes it easier for them to share a room.  Oh and I’m so excited to have them wear matching clothes! Gender Reveal Cupcakes | Garnish and Glaze

The only thing that is difficult about having a girl is deciding a name.  We have tons of boy names we both love and agree on but we have different tastes in girl names.

This pregnancy (exactly halfway through today!) has been going pretty well but I must say I’ve been gaining weight a lot faster.  I think it’s because this time around I have a food blog so I’m making/eating treats more often than I did when I didn’t blog and just worked.  Hopefully I can lose the weight as fast as I did after having Carly.

I just started working out more consistently since I’ve been feeling great during this second trimester so hopefully that makes up for the extra cupcake and bowl of ice cream I eat each day.  I’ve got a major sweet tooth.  And those Mini Cadbury Eggs don’t help either.  I ate a whole bag last week.  They’re just so addicting!

Okay, so these cupcakes are like the Hostess cream filled cupcakes and quite easy to make.  After baking the cupcakes and cooling completely you just cut out a little hole, eat the piece you cut out, and squeeze in some dyed filling.Gender Reveal Cupcakes | Garnish and Glaze

Then just dip it in ganache and pipe on some question marks or a phrase.Gender Reveal Cupcakes | Garnish and Glaze

Then just bring these to your friends and family and watch the surprise on their faces as they bite into these delicious cupcakes.  Or you could have a friend make them for you so you can be surprised too!

Ingredients

For the Cupcakes:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup hot water

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup marshmallow cream
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • Food coloring

For the Ganache:

  • 2.5 ounces bittersweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup cream, not

For the icing:

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons milk

Instructions

For the Cupcakes:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and line a muffin tin with paper cupcake liners.
  • Mix all dry ingredients together in a mixing bowl. In another bowl, mix the milk, oil, egg, and vanilla together. Add to the dry ingredients until just combined and then whisk in the the hot water. Fill the liners 3/4 full (12-13 cupcakes) and bake for 17-20 minutes until toothpick comes out clean. Let cool in the pan 10 minutes and then on a cooling rack. When completely cool, cut a 1-inch hole in the top about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way down. Eat or discard the cut out portion.

For the filling:

  • With an electric mixer, whip marshmallow cream, butter, and sugar together until smooth and then add food coloring. Place in a piping bag and refrigerate until ready to use. Pipe the cream into the hole of the cupcakes until flush with the top of the cupcake.

For the ganache:

  • Place chocolate in a bowl and pour hot cream over the chocolate and cover with saran wrap for 2 minutes. Mix until smooth and then let it cool for 5 minutes before dipping the tops of the cupcakes in the ganache. You may need to use a spatula to spread and even out the ganache after dipping. Refrigerate for 20 minutes before piping on icing.

For the icing:

  • With an electric mixer, whip all icing ingredients together and then place in a piping bag with a piping tip (you could just put in a Ziploc bag and cut a hole). Refrigerate until ready to use. Pipe on a question mark or message.
  • Keep cupcakes in a air tight container in the fridge.

Congrats on your little one! We are having a gender reveal party this weekend to announce we’re having a little girl, too 🙂 This is our first.

Question about the cupcakes. If I make them on Friday night (for the party on Saturday afternoon), will the marshmallow center be okay if they are left out (covered)? Or should they be put in the fridge…or will that “hurt” the marshmallow? Thanks for the tip!!

Thank you! And congrats on your little girl too Brandy! If you make them the night before, store them in the fridge and just pull them out like an hour before you serve them. The marshmallow frosting will be just fine.

Thanks Paige! I’ve loved being a mom to a girl so another will be fun. I definitely hope we have a boy eventually though.
