Glazed Ham with Cherry Sauce | Garnish & Glaze

Easter is coming up which means you need to start planning your family Easter Dinner.  I grew up eating ham for Easter with some yummy potatoes and fresh spring veggies so here is a delicious glazed ham with my mom’s homemade cherry sauce.

I love ham!  It’s both sweet and salty (love that combo), moist, and tastes great alongside creamy or cheesy potatoes.  I mean, just look at that sweet glaze dripping and glistening on the ham.  My mouth is watering!

Now, I’m actually not a big fan of cherries but this sauce tastes amazing, especially on this ham.  It’s so simple to make, made with few ingredients.  I especially love the lemon which ads a refreshing element to this sweet sauce.

While I enjoy the Easter food, candy, and cute bunnies and eggs, what I love the most about this holiday is the meaning behind it all– my Savior, Jesus Christ.

At church the children recently learned a beautiful song called “The Miracle” which pretty much sums up my thoughts and feelings of this holiday.  The lyrics of the song recount the many miracles Jesus performed during his life and teaches that anything is possible through Him.  My favorite line is the last: “but I know this, of all His miracles, the most incredible must be the miracle that rescues me.”  You must listen to it.  It’s just beautiful.

I am so incredibly grateful to my Savior for the miracle of the Atonement.  Knowing that Christ suffered and felt all of the pains and sorrows of everyone, even me, has been the greatest comfort in my life.  He has paid the price for me so that despite my many faults and mistakes, I can be forgiven and live again someday with Him.  I am so grateful that Christ rose again, lives today, and is constantly walking right alongside me.

Have a Happy Easter celebrating the Savior and enjoying the company of family and friends while enjoying delicious food.

Glazed Ham with Cherry Sauce

Prep Time20 minutes mins

Total Time2 hours hrs 20 minutes mins
Servings: 18 -20
Author: Garnish and Glaze

Ingredients

For the Ham:

  • 1 7-9 pound fully cooked spiral sliced bone-in ham (discard packet)

For the Glaze:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1 cup cherry juice, or cranberry juice

For the Cherry Sauce:

  • 2 15 ounce can pitted tart red cherries
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 4 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 lemon, sliced

Instructions

For the Ham:

  • Place ham flat side down in a rimmed baking dish and cover tightly with foil. Bake at 325 for 1 1/2 hours (meanwhile, prepare the glaze and cherry sauce). Remove the foil and brush all over with the glaze. Place back in the oven for 20-30 more minutes, adding another layer of glaze every 10 minutes, until it reaches an internal temperature of 140 degrees and glazed to your liking. Remove from oven and cover with foil to keep warm.

For the Glaze:

  • In a small saucepan, mix sugar, cornstarch, and mustard together. Add the juice and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook and stir until it starts to thicken (about 2-3 minutes).

For the Cherry Sauce:

  • Mix together the sugar, cinnamon, and cornstarch in a sauce pan. Drain the juice from the cherries into the pan and cook over medium-high heat, stirring constantly until thickened. Add the cherries and sliced lemons, reduce heat to low and allow to simmer for 15 minutes. Serve over ham.
