Steak Kabobs are one of our favorite things to cook on the grill! They’re easy and fun to prepare/eat, plus they cook quite quickly. For more grilled recipes, try Barbecue Pork Chops with Grilled Peaches, Baby Back Ribs, and Grilled Lemon Pepper Chicken.

Steak Kabobs

If you’re looking to impress your dinner guests at your next cookout, make these Beef Kabobs! They’re lean, tender, full of flavor, and allergy friendly. Thread on a variety of your favorite vegetables and you’ve got a healthy dish that is sure to satisfy!

Ingredients on a marble surface- oil, soy sauce, vinegar, lemon, beef, peppers, zucchini, onion, and skewers.

Ingredients for Beef Kabobs:

  • Sirloin Steak– This cut of beef is lean, flavorful, juicy, and tender.
  • Bell Peppers– Choose your favorite color peppers. I prefer the taste and look of red, yellow, and/or orange.
  • Onion– Red onions are more mild and very tasty roasted on the grill. Sweet onions are another great option.
  • Zucchini– Try to get zucchini that are only 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter so everything threaded on the kabob can lay flat against the grill when cooking.

Ingredients for Marinade:

  • Olive oil– This is one of the healthiest oils. Oil helps balance acidic flavors, retain moisture, and transfer fat-soluble flavors.
  • Soy Sauce– Not only does it add a nice savory umami flavor, but it also helps tenderize and create a caramelized color that make it look more appetizing.
  • Garlic– Fresh crushed garlic has the best flavor.
  • Worcestershire sauce- This has a strong umami flavor. It tastes tangy, sweet, and savory.
  • Lemon Juice & Vinegar– These add some flavor and the acid tenderizes the meat.
  • Dijon Mustard– Just a little is needed to add flavor.
  • Pepper– Fresh cracked black pepper provides a better and stronger flavor.

Place beef in a gallon size Zip-loc bag.
Mix together all marinade ingredients. Pour over the beef in the bag. (Place bag in a dish or bowl in case it leaks.) Remove as much air as possible and seal. Place in fridge and marinate for 3-6 hours.Diptych- Steak marinading in a zip lock bag; wooden skewers in a baking sheet with water.

  3. Prep Grill

Preheat grill to medium high heat (450-500°F).

  4. Prep Vegetables

Prepare vegetables by cutting into 1 1/4 inch pieces. Spread on cutting board or pan, drizzle with oil, and sprinkle with salt and fresh ground pepper. Toss to coat evenly.
Thread marinated steak and vegetables on skewers. Discard leftover marinade.Diptych- A baking sheet with raw bell peppers, zucchini, and onions; vegetables and beef threaded on skewers.

  5. Grill

Place kabobs on grill for 3-4 minutes per side (all 4 sides) for medium rare to medium doneness.

FAQs

What cut of steak is best for kabobs?

Sirloin! This cut of steak is lean, tender, and not too expensive. Marinating the meat for 3-6 hours not only adds flavor but helps tenderize the meat. If only marinating for 30-60 minutes, a more tender (yet expensive) cut should be used like filet mignon or beef tenderloin.

What type of skewers are best?

It depends! Bamboo Skewers are best for steak kabobs because they don’t conduct heat so the meat won’t get over cooked. Bamboo skewers should be soaked in water to prevent burning. I like to start soaking them when I start marinating the meat.
Flat Metal Skewers are sturdier and can be reused. Be sure to get the FLAT ones otherwise your food will spin around on the skewer and be difficult to flip and cook evenly.

Why use oil in marinades?

Oil is used in marinades to help transfer the fat soluble flavors into the meat. It also helps keep the meat moist.

TOOLS USED TO MAKE STEAK KABOBS:

  • Knife Set– This set comes with all the knives you need and they are of great quality (going on 12 years in my home!).
  • Cutting Board– I love having various sizes of cutting boards and these are awesome because they won’t slip and slide around on the counter.
  • Bamboo Skewers– These are one time use skewers but wood skewers are best for cooking steak because they don’t conduct heat so the meat stays moist, juicy, and tender.
  • Propane Grill– This 4 burner grill has ample amount of space to grill your meat and vegetables to perfection!
